Re: The Bird Thread

Re: The Bird Thread
Get out there real early, before sun-up. Put out the mealworms, and start wistling while pinching your nose. It's the only way to get the wistle to sound like their call.

is this the time to do it? early april?

Re: The Bird Thread
HP, I can't do it. lol Don't go out there holding your nose and wistling at dawn. The neighbors will laugh and you will accomplish nothing. I have no clue how to get them there other than feeding them. You might can imitate their call, works with some birds to call them in. But I've never tried it with bluebirds mainly cause I aint interested in eatting them.

Shucks, ya should have told her to flap her arms like wings and dance around the yard while making that noise. I would have gladly gone there with my camera. That would have been on our funny video thread for sure. I probably would have put it on americas funniest home videos to. hehehehehe

Re: The Bird Thread
I am not a bird watcher, unless it is in the oven, but I have seen some really beautiful blue birds here in Jackson and up in the park as well. The birds were a light shade of blue that was different from what I remembered in Missouri. The birds were also smaller almost like a wren.

Re: The Bird Thread
This little sparrow migrates to the lower states from Canada in the Winter and leaves anywhere from the lst. of April to the 15th..I have them at my feeders all winter long...but now is the sad time...watching for the day they are gone...at least they will be back next winter. They nest and bring up their broods in Canada.
the image wasn't showing up, so i corrected the picture for you, p.

i love this little bird and i will miss it too, p. it's a very tidy little bird-eats seeds that the sloppy ones spill to the ground.

i think what you saw was the "mountain bluebird", vs the eastern bluebird or the western bluebird and the light blue/more solid color tells me it was most likely a female if, that is, the light blue was grayish. beautiful, either way.

Re: The Bird Thread
Although I'm not a "bird watcher", in the strictest sense, we've taken interest in mourning doves. A family member's back yard (in a central CA city, of all places) has been chosen for this:
The same pair showed up late last year (only one brood reared), and returned a few weeks ago. They should be around for several hatchings this year, getting an early start.

With a gun is the preferred method. I suppose you'd rather me pop a cap in miss piggy huh? Yes there's other food but killing plants is cruel, and nothing taste quite the same. And given they mate for life, I'm doing them birds a favor and puttin them outta their misery.
And yes, I could shoot a quail, but again, just don't taste quite the same.
hehehehehe.....

You guys still hunt quail in Carolina? I prefer quail but we can't hunt them in these parts anymore. Fireants and coyotes have pretty much killed off all the quail around here. Plenty of pigs though. My grandpa has a lot of farmland and he can't get enough people to shoots pigs on his land.

Re: The Bird Thread
I come from a long line of hunters and fishermen, but I have always been taught from small on that there is only two times to pull the trigger and take a life, any life. One is for food and the other is for self defense. I have shot many animals in my life but I cannot see the "sport" of shooting an unarmed animal that has no chance of escape or fighting back just for the joy of killing it.

I have yet to see dove sold in stores. And even if it was, it'd still have to be killed for me to eat it. So if I want dove, then it's a necessity.

That's what my father taught me too and why I intend to eat it after I shoot it.

Disagree a little OT. My mom's side of the family are farmers and protecting the crop is priority #1. The crops are their livelyhood and wild pigs have become a huge problem in recent years. Ferel Pigs are like 500 lbs rats and are very destructive to local farmland. They are considered a nuisance like rats, and since they have no natural predators, their population goes unchecked. You will find a lot of local farmers who will hunt pigs not for food, not for sport, but for population control, and preservation of their crops. They shoot them and let them lay for the buzzards. A pack of pigs can destroy an entire field of crop.

They don't care about us shooting pigs. They aren't sweet and pretty as birds. It's perfectly alright for them to go buy their dead cow, chicken, and pig which has been tortured through out it's captive life and had a bolt shot through it's head so they can go to the store and pick up their meat. But God forbid those of us that want to work for our food to shoot a pretty little dove.

Cute delicious deer, smothered in onions and peppers.

ok. first of all what slick said is perfectly legit.CarolinaHound wrote:Big Slick wrote:Old Timer wrote:I come from a long line of hunters and fishermen, but I have always been taught from small on that there is only two times to pull the trigger and take a life, any life. second of all what you said is stupid. i refuse to eat veal, and for years i was a veggie. it took a lot to get me to eat meat again but that doesn't mean that i don't think of the torture some poor animals go through. that's another thread.
ok, slick's twisted deer comment came in as i was posting this. so you're both stupid.
