Mass. Man Charged With Alleged Terror Plot to Attack U.S. Shopping Malls

27-year-old Massachusetts man has been charged with conspiring with others to support and plan violent jihad in and outside the United States, including terror plots to attack U.S. shopping malls and U.S. military in Iraq.

Federal officials in Boston say Tarek Mehanna of Sudbury worked with others from 2001 to May of 2008 to provide support and resources in a conspiracy to "kill, kidnap, main or injure" people in foreign countries and to kill prominent U.S. politicians.

Mehanna was charged in a complaint with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, according to the Department of Justice.

The complaint further alleges that the co-conspirators attempted to radicalize others and inspire each other by, among other things, watching and distributing jihadi videos.

The charges accuse the suspects of talking about their desire to participate in Islamist holy war and of their desire to die on the battlefield.

The case comes less than a month after an Afghan-born man, Najibullah Zazi, was accused of plotting a bomb attack against the United States.

ya, i'm not surprised...don't forget, we've got these high intellectual type terrorists in MA, like Bin Laden's son:

Abdullah bin Laden (born c. 1965); graduate of Harvard Law School; lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts on 9/11, the only relative to remain in the United States, staying in Boston for almost a month.

I'm beginning to wonder how many of these people would become terrorists if terrorism hadn't become such a theme in our everyday lives.

It sounds silly, but one of the reasons that news channels tend not to report suicides is that the more people here about suicides, the more they try to kill themselves. I just googled and found this:

http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/France-Telecom-Suicides-Could-Be-Spread-By-Copycat-Behaviour-Executives-Warn/Article/200909315382129?lpos=Business_Article_Related_Content_Region_2&lid=ARTICLE_15382129_France_Telecom_Suicides_Could_Be_Spread_By_Copycat_Behaviour%2C_Executives_Warn.

23 suicides, and 13 attempted suicides, at the French Telecom in the last 6 months. Also, whenever a celebrity kills themselves, there is usually a whole series of people doing the same thing. Likewise, whenever a serial killer becomes infamous, we end up with copycat serial killers trying to do the same thing. And we see it with the suicide rampages in schools/colleges, where killers are often emulating a previous rampage.

I wonder if anyone has ever given thought to how this plays out with terrorists. The media always reports on terrorists that are caught, but not only that, they also tend to lay out in detail what the terrorist was planning to do. Surely if people kill themselves because they hear about someone else doing it, then giving all these details about terrorist attacks is going to encourage others to follow suit.

Anyway, just thinking out loud...

There is lodgic behind that. Maybe it's just to remind the rest of us that we are not as smart a species as we sometimes think we are. I remember my mother asking me, "If your brother jumped off a cliff; would you do it?" I guess for some folks that answer would be yes. Stupidity is rampant.

i think kazza makes a valid point. i remember back when my son keith was in middle school, a classmate threw herself in front of a train and that was all she wrote.
within the next 3 months, 3 more of his classmates did themselves in, too. i often wondered if all the press the first one got wasn't at least a part of the reason for the ensuing 'epidemic'.

It's very possible. Along side of the fact that suicide is'nt the tabboo it once was. It's actually been portrayed as a cool thing in some instances.
