New species
Does anybody have any idea where a new species that has never been seen before comes from. It seems to be that some species must die off and new ones come into play as this happens all of the time. But where do they come from? Any ideas?

Re: New species
tried to post a link to definition of species, etc, but post is blank.
the theory of evolution says branching is caused by genetic mutations, and moderated by environment.
most mutations are fatal, and those that are not, may not be suitable in the organism's environment, meaning less chance to survive and reproduce.
species is just a term for organsims that have branched away from each other but are still obviously closely related. as in horse + donkey = mule.
different species of chickens or cows may be mated but a dog cannot mate with either. no matter how hard they try. so i would expect to find that dogs and cows are classified as different genus, probably as canine and bovine, or some terms like that.
just google species for better understanding.

There's no clear line that seperates things into species. Some groups of animals appear very similar so we say that they are the same species. Some look only ever so slightly less similar so we call them separate species. I'm not sure where the line is actually drawn, but I'm sure wikipedia must have a definition.
New species come about through evolution, so if you take two groups of cows and leave one in a very cold climate and one in a very hot climate, eventually natural selection will cause them to diverge into two distinct species. After a few generations they will both still be very similar, so we would call them the same species. Maybe even after a hundred generations we would still call them the same species, though there will be some small differences between them. But somewhere down the line they will have become so different that we call them separate species.

Re: New species
Here's an interesting article on certain lizards evolving new traits that over time could separate them from their 'parent' species

You might find this one interesting/inspiring too, OT

Re: New species
I liked the one about the lizards and the ants as it shows how nature can adapt species to their surroundings.
As far as the grandpa lizzard goes well we may be old but we aint dead yet, just goes to show ya that you are never to old are ya.
And what do you mean "grumpy some of the time" My wife says I was born grumpy and got worse as I got older.

Sorry, came to this one late!
OT, it is simply called evolution.
Over vast expanses of time, small but significant changes take place to one species (for a variety of reasons), and eventually what you end up with is a new species.
A species is considered new when a female could not give birth if mated with a male, because there is too much genetic drift.
If you see what I mean...
As to those that die off, that is right, indeed about 90% of all species that once lived, are now dead and gone, and man had nothing to do with it. Again it is easy to explain, with natural selection.

My neighbor swears that all new species are dropped off by a space ship. But then that is what he said about me to.
