The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
This is just a fun thread to post and enjoy videos, photos of dogs and cats and share their stories with others. A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down. He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
this is a great thread piotb.
i have a new puppy now and i love her, but a little over a year ago i lost my true canine soul mate of almost 16 years. loyal and devoted until she took her last breath in my arms.
this was taken just a few weeks before we lost her.
my best friend and i will never, ever forget her.

Cats aren't much different. We had our Patches for almost 19 years before we had to have her put down because of illness. She wasn't just a family pet, she was family. She will always be with us in our hearts.

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
The loss of beloved pet is a terrible thing. She looks so sweet in that pic. I bet she was a real love bunny. I have always been wary of people who have never truly bonded with an animal, who do not care to and treat/regard them as something so much lower than themselves. I have always found those type of individuals to be rather selfish and not as capable of deep love, understanding, compassion, empathy and communication. To share the true love of an animal and to know their hearts and really be able to communicate with them, is something very special. I believe they have a soul. I really do. They know pain, hurt, loneliness, suffering, love, happiness and every emotion, that some humans believe they are the only ones who possess or are capable of. I have never understood that foolish idea. The loss of your little furry can be much like the loss of a person.HotParadox wrote:this is a great thread piotb.

I have had animals; cats, dogs and in the past a horse, all of my life. As a child we always had several dogs an cats in our family. A mastiff we had, once pulled my younger brother out of a lake and saved him from drowning. (true story) They are amazing creatures. Dogs and cats are now brought to retirement and assisted living homes to cheer and visit the ill, the aged and the sick. They are brought to hospitals to children's cancer wards. Dogs are used and trained by every law enforcement agency and the military. They are the companions and helpers for people with every type of disability. They can be taught every kind of rescue. Studies have show that they can aid with depression. They know/sense when we will return home to them. They love you, no matter if you are a humble beggar living on the streets, or a celebrity with a mansion. The real stories of dogs who travel for months and months, hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles to re-unite with their owners fascinate me and only serve to prove their relentless devotion. They don't care what mood we are in, how able bodied we are or what we look like. They love us just the same. Humans can learn much from animals.
They are to me, the pure embodiment of love, of loyalty, faithfulness and friendship.
Currently, I have Max, a golden retriever (who can surf), we have Snickers the cat from hell lol, and Ruby, my wife's dog who has and wears "outfits". (don't ask) Today's fashion choice is a pink jammie outfit for lounging. Max, just sits a little closer to me and is grateful to share the testosterone between us and watch the Yankee Spring training games on MLB. lol

I am sorry also for your loss. I still think of the many dogs that were my companions and friends over the years and miss them terribly. As soon as I can figure out how to post a picture on here (I was lucky to just have recently figured out videos-but have no clue to pics) I will of our babies. Princess is a beautiful dog. I am sure she misses Grace as much as you do hun. But, you still have eachother and there is comfort in that. Give her a hug for me. Yeah, I hug animals. Shoot me. lolPeregrine(Endangered) wrote:I have two dogs...one was Grace Kelley, a chocolate lab and Princess Diana, a Weimaraner...wonderful dogs..a joy to be around..I lost Grace Kelley last year to Renal failure...still hard to talk about her..I'm not going to post Grace's picture at this time because its still too painful for me...but here is a picture of Diana, my big baby.

absolutely true ot. our cat Andrew Philip, he's been with us a little over 11 years now and i love him as much as my dog. they say that cats are this and that, but this cat follows me around more than the puppy, Lily. Taggy, like i said, was my girl, Andy is my boy and the new puppy, Lily Belle, well she's not as attached to me. she really seems to be more of a family dog.
here are some pictures of my beautiful pets. my Lily Belle is now 15 months old and, darn it, i don't have a current picture of her on my computer.

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
Cats are also very special. Have you ever read the book Tribe of the Tiger? you would enjoy it. Also, Cleveland Amory's series That Cat and The Curmudgeon are wonderful reads, very heart warming. Cats are more independent than dogs, I believe. But, they are no less capable of showing and expressing their love for us and they are great companions as well. They still carry just a bit and enough of the "wild" gene, and can astound you with their behavior at times. It is interesting to see many of the body movements (especially hunting and stalking) that parallel the Big cats isn't it?Old Timer wrote:

Snickers is quite the talker. Between her and my Italian wife, I have no peace. lmao She is also the boss around here. The dogs give her a wide berth and repsect her. She eats before they do and she is the first one out the sliding glass door, while they patiently stand aside and let her pass. Hell, she scares me sometimes. lol She is the true alpha queen. Yet, after a knee surgery I had, when I limped in the door on crutches and collasped in the barkalounger, in pain, sweating and groaning, she immediately jumped on the back of the chair, very, very carefully and delicately inched her way slowly down the front, onto the arm and carefully stretched out her paw and placed it lightly on top of my bandaged knee and then leaned her tiny head forward and began to lick it. Tell me animals are not intelligent.
So, I think we should include our little cats in this thread as well.

Really, two things melt my heart: the laugh of a baby and the look on an animal's little face. I love the snow on Lily Belle's muzzle and her "look". Then there is the cat. You gotta love cats...the masters of lounging and sneakiness.
This is Snickers favvie deal, to spread herself out on the floor on her back. (it has to be a genetic thing with them, lol, they all do this) This is usually done when I am trying to walk somewhere and right infront of my feet. I have tripped, stumbled, hopped over at the last moment and banged my head and other body parts in more places in this house than I can count, to keep from stepping on her or injuring her when she does this. I am sure it delights her to no end.

thank you so much, piotb. you've go me crying, such a tender letter. well, i do believe that our pets do go to heaven. they bible says that lions and lambs will lie together in the end.
it's very hard for me to talk about Taggy. i can't tell you how much i miss her. she got thyroid cancer and i do blame 2 things-the chemical in frontline and the medication she was on for cushing's disease. both are suspects in thyroid cancer. well, she had chemo and radiation and we had no pet insurance. it cost too much for me to confess to you, but it extended her life and quality of life for over a year. she was great. then she got a stomach ache and the hospital did not hydrate her with an iv and they called to say that she wouldn't be coming home that nite as planned. they told me what happened. they wanted us to put her down and we decided to bring her home to die with her family around her. which she did that night. my son flew home from california and we were all together to comfort her and to say goodbye. she was not in pain, so that was a blessing. i need to get off this thread. sorry.

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
Thank you. But, I feel it is we who are truly blessed by the animals in our family. I was blessed however, to find at last find my soul mate, who shares my love of them. I believe the same actually. I believe when we leave this earth, we will be reunited with not only our human loved ones, but with our animal loved ones as well.
"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...."

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
Yes HP, that would be great!!! I looked at trying to do that and realized that I could not. How about the Joy, Love, Companionship of Dogs and Cats. Thanks, good idea.
Snickers knows exactly what she is doing. She plays us like a violin. She actually throws real tantrums. I have never seen anything like this in my life. If she is being naughty, or overly playful, wanting a treat before she has finished her real dinner, wanting to mess up the papers on my desk while I am trying to work, or getting in the way when I am trying to cook, wanting attention when I am in the middle of something, etc., I tell her "no". (no yelling involved, I would never yell at any animal- you just have to speak to them- they understand) Anyways, she will just throw herself on the floor and yowls like she is being strangled. She twists around and just has a little hissy fit, all the while making these bizarre sounds! It's hysterical. It lasts about a minute or two. Then she gets up, gives you an evil look an stomps out of the room. The first time she did it, it freaked me out. Now we are used to these little episodes. She had one last night. My wife and I were watching tv in bed and started getting "cozy" and Snickers jumped on the bed. I gently lifted her into my arms and carried her outside the door and closed it. I got back into bed and we could hear her howling and throwing herself again the door. What a mood breaker! This happens whenever she can't get her way. I have no idea how the hell she got so damned spoiled! lmao

this is wonderful, really. the name, it reminds me of the story which all of my children loved but one of my sons loved it so much he would ask me to read it to him every night. in the story the new master, the one who saved beauty, asked beauty 'how can you be so sweet esp after all you have had been through' and beauty said that 'a kind master makes a kind horse and you, my master, are kind.' i would always emphasize that to the kids. and to be honest that little phrase really touched me, always will. i've always felt that it's true, not only of our pets but of our children, too.Put It Out There Baby wrote:As I mentioned Cleveland Amory to OT, his rescue ranch is an incredible organization, and the final haven to all and any of God's rescued and abandoned creatures:

I got back into bed and we could hear her howling and throwing herself again the door. What a mood breaker! This happens whenever she can't get her way. I have no idea how the hell she got so damned spoiled! lmao
What I want to know is how can a cat be 5 rooms away and sound asleep and you open a can of corn and nothing. but if it is a can of tuna beore you get it all the way open ther she is.

I also have four cats...Raymond, Tess, PeggySue and Zadie...cats have incredible hearing..I will try to be very quiet opening a can of tuna...and Tess is on it like a bee on honey...It never ceases to amaze me...Tess is like a little dog...she actually growls when she hears someone outside...she will chase a wad of paper and bring it back to me...I have stories about all four of them...I could write a book....they are intelligent, no one can tell me differently...

Yeo cats are very smart. and don't forget the old saying. Dogs drool and cats rule. Dogs have owners, cats have a staff. if you call a dog will come, a cat says take a message and I will get back to ya.

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
Dogs are very dependent on their owners. They need and seek attention and communication. Cats do what they want to, when they want to and always, always on their terms. Dogs want and need to please their owners, cats could care less. lol The roles are very reversed. Yet, cats can be and are very affectionate when they want to be. They just are the ones in control. They choose when, where, how and how much it seems.
One of my favorite examples of their nutty behavior, is what I call the 10 o'clock crazies. Every evening around 10pm (have no idea what this signifies in catdom), Snickers gets the 5 or 10 minute crazies. She suddenly jumps up, starts play growling and making other odd noises and tearing around the house at full break neck speed from room to room, bouncing off the walls, the furniture, leaping on and off stuff, gurgling and growling and running amok. Then she just calmly settles back down and looks at you like "what???" It's a bit like living with a National Geographic special, in person. She does this every single night. We have no clue why. The dogs just lay low and get the hell outta the way. lol

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
What games do you play with your cats??? Okay, this one is sick, but this is what I do. Sometimes, when we are laying in bed we have Wrestle Mania 2 out of 3 falls. I taught her this game years ago. She wil leap on the bed and I will slap the top of the comforter or sheet and say Wrestle Mania, take your corner. We have this very large bed with four large square posts (the ones at the headboard are taller and the ones by the foot of the bed are lower.) So she hops on one of the lower ones if she wants to play the game. I then do the announcing, saying things like "in this corner we have......weighing.......from.......who has won....", and I give her some silly "wrester's name", etc. Then I slide my had and arm under the sheet or the comforter (you would not want to do this bare handed-she still has back claws and teeth like a tiny barracuda) and go "ding, ding ding". She then pounces on my arm/hand and we wrestle like crazy. She kicks with her back feet, and bites and growls and I flip her over and she flips my arm over and back and forth we go, several times. I wiggle her around, gently grab her head a bit, etc., and then she runs back to her "corner". My wife supplies the crowd "cheers and boos". lol I then describe the round, and go "ding ding ding" again, and it starts over. We do three rounds and sometimes she wins and sometimes I win. It is her favvie game and we play it almost every night. I told you it was sick.
She will also play tag. She will tag either myself of my wife with her paw and run like crazy, making these wierd sounds and you chase her throughout the house. She leaps on various pieces of the furniture and then you catch her and tag her and start to run and she chases you until she catches you and tags you with her paw again and it starts over. Cats are such a trip!

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
that is so funny! one of the games i play with Andy is he'll be lying on his back staring at me. then he'll raise his four paws up in the air. that's code for "play with me. NOW." so i put my hand in between his front paws, next to his face, and i'll start saying in a high voice, "ow, ow, ow!" immediately he'll tightly grasp my hand with both his front paws, while furiously kicking my arm with his back paws; then he'll start fake biting my captured hand and he won't let go and stop nibbling until i plead with him, "turn me loose, turn me loose!" then he lets go and it just carries on until he gets annoyed with me and slowly saunters away.

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
I have to say...good thing the other 3 cats can't read...that Tess is the most intelligent cat I know of...one little game is she hides on the washing machine...when I come down the hall and reach the machine...she ambushes me and jumps on my shoulder and wraps herself around my neck. She is jealous of any affection I show the other cats...same as tuna, she knows when I'm paying attention to one of them and comes running out as if to say, no no no, I'm your one and only

Re: The Joy, Love, Companionship Of Dogs And Cats
We use to have a bunch of feral cats that hung around. One day I had my pellet gun out and was just shooting pine cones out of the trees. One fell and a grey kitten jumped on it. I remembered pop would use a sock filled with bird feathers to train his bird dogs so I got a sock and put a couple weights in it so it could be thrown better, and stuffed it with another sock and tied it to a string. I'd throw it and shoot at it, and it hit the ground and the cat would pounce and I'd start pulling it back to me.
Took weeks, but the cat finally got to where I could throw it without the string and the cat would pounce on it then bring it up to within a couple feet of me and drop it, then run back ready to do it again. Never could get my hands on her, she was wild, but we had that little game we played. Haven't seen her in a couple years.
