Well, number one...

Последний дюйм (The Last Inch).



The James Aldridge story "The Last Inch" was written in 1957 and translated into Russian the same year, while the first English edition came out in 1960.
Most unusual story line: veteran pilot decides to make some extra-money by filming underwater shark feeding at the remote Red Sea location. He takes with him young son for a plane ride, while goes underwater. The trouble is: while filming, he has been viciously attacked by a pack of angry sharks which render him incapacitated to fly home. Now he faces an option: either both of them die in the desert or his little boy must fly them back. His son has some rudimentary knowledge of flying, but does not have any real experience. The father lost a lot of blood and he is in constant pain. He is drifting in and out of consciousness, hence additional danger may be that his son will be all along in the air. Keeps the viewer on the edge of the seat. The musical score is well chosen as well. Shame that this movie was shown only for the Russian Audience!

In 2008 this film was celebrating the 50th anniversary.

When this war musical was released (1973), audiences thronged at the theatres, asking for a spare ticket, and the old, long-forgotten Darkie song became very popular again. Incidentally, the character nicknamed Darkie had a real-life prototype Leonid Bykovs childhood friend, Victor Shcheglov.

Watch it and think twice voting for people who start wars, who says that your nation is better, who let people die!

1943. In the answer of the actions of partisans and also according to the program "The plan of the distraction of Slavonic nation", Nazis were burning hundreds of villages with their inhabitants along all Belorussia. Directed to one of such villages a division of "SS" was given an order to suspend an action unexpectedly at the last moment. Instead of destroying the inhabitants and the village, German soldiers became kind and lovely lodgers. Will the young soldier be in time to have a talk about his love and feelings to Polina, a daughter of the mistress, until a new order will come? How much time is left? Neither love, nor murder was in life of Franz.

Realism gradually changing into a thriller has been represented in the film stylistically. Main characters had to go through a number of mystical transformations, a number of situations which made them choose between craving to each other and desire to survive every time. There are almost no dialogues in the film. Unexpected and terrible events do not provoke main characters to talk.

thanks for this thread, I'll be watching all of these. I'm really interested to see the Great Patriotic War one. So very few people in the West give the former Soviet Union and it's people the gratitude and respect they deserve for that.

Damn, that was a good movie! I've never seen archival footage of Yak-9s in action before. The captured Me-109 looked like it might have actually been a painted up Lavochkin La-5, going to have to recheck that.

Even in Russia where alcoholism is a national scourge and - to say so - national art's topic - there are not many movies that shows with such vividness and strength all the hell and total chaos and insanity of the life of a alco-path. You must see this man, his flat which looks like Hell landscape and his doings that are caricature and horrible at the same time - REALLY horrible since that man ends violating moral law... And betrayal of a friend - the only being sympathized him and one sent to save him - plunged this man into "outer darkness where is weeping and gnashing of teeth". Still the man is not evil in himself - he's possessed. And in the moments of sobriety his suffering are sharp. One of the best works of splendid Sergei Shakurov. Also the film is notable as animal movie - the spectator is just completely charmed by this second figure in the story - Newfoundland dog called Друг (Friend)... The songs and poetry by Alexander Rosenbaum also are excellent...

The Hound of the Baskervilles (Russian: Приключения Шерлока Холмса и доктора Ватсона: Собака Баскервилей, English: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: The Hound of the Baskervilles) is a 1981 Soviet film adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's novel of the same name. It was the third installment in the TV series about adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. A potent streak of humour ran through the film as concerns references to traditional British customs and stereotypes, ensuring the film's popularity with several generations of Russophone viewers. Other features of this best entry in the series include excellent exterior shots which closely match the novel's setting in the Dartmoor marshland, as well as an all-star cast: in addition to the famous Livanov - Solomin duo as Holmes an Watson, the film stars an internationally acclaimed actor/director Nikita Mikhalkov as Sir Henry Baskerville and the Russian movie legend Oleg Yankovsky as the villain Stapleton.

When you visit museum of Sherlock Holmes in London, Baker St., first thing that you see on the second floor is a number of pictures of all actors who ever played Holmes in the movies, and in the middle of that compilation you can see the biggest photo - the photo of Vasiliy Livanov.

All world cinematographers (including British ones) have admitted that Vasiliy Livanov is the best Sherlock Holmes that ever appeared on screen. And it is true. There were made several movies about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson for Russian TV in the late 70's and early 80's, including such films as The Meeting, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Bloody script and many more (about 10 total number). Livanov as Sherlock, Vitaliy Solomin as Watson, Rina Zelenaya as Mrs.Hudson, Borislav Brondukov as Inspector Lestrade all make these series directed by Igor Maslennikov an all-time masterpiece. Almost all of actors started their careers in theaters (Livanov, Solomin and Zelenaya continued giving performances even after their success on the big screen) which gave films amazing atmosphere of reality. The images of old London were carefully reconstructed in Baltic cities almost untouched by time which gave movies a lot of similarities with real XIX century London. All movies (it wouldn't be right to call them episodes) are set on very high level, and from the opening unforgettable music score they charm every viewer. It's very hard to distinguish the best film of the series, every of them has something unique.

This set of movies is a must-see for everyone whether you've read the book or not.

Yes. I've heard that it wasn't released on the original schedule because the Soviet-German non-aggression pact was going into effect. Instead, it was held until after June 22, 1941.
I don't know for certain if that's true.

The film is based on short stories by Russian writer Yuri Guerman. The year of 1944. The Second World War. A marine air force regiment is stationed at a small airfield. For the pilots, this is both the front and the rear. They live here with their families, leading a seemingly normal life, giving small parties and even attending concerts of touring artistes. And yet, any operational flight may prove to be the last one in their life The film incorporates the unique wartime documentaries, which were filmed, on the one side, by the British, and on the other side - by the German camera men. This work was done at a time when the German bombers attacked the British caravan of freight ships sailing due Murmansk under the Lend-Lease Act. On the British part, the filming was done by a camera man sailing on board of one of the attacked ships. On the German part, there was a camera operator flying with the pilot of one of the bombers...

It is a comedy cartoon which is put on the motives of Alan Alexander Milne's known poem "The King's Breakfast" in S.Marshak's translation. It tells us how for the sake of trifling whim of whimsical king the whole kingdom was agitated.

Сказка про Федота-стрельца, удалого молодца) is a play poem by Russian writer and actor Leonid Filatov, written in 1985 and first published in Yunost in 1986. With a storyline based on Russian folk tales, 'Fedot' is a social and political satire on contemporary realities of life in Russia. Characters mix archaic Russian language, typical for folklore, with neologisms of modern Russian, providing additional comic effect.

Film adaptations have been made in 1988, 2000 and 2008.

Yes, I did. Thank you very much. I remember this video but I've seen it a long time ago. And I think I've never seen the clip in full version. By the way, I'm sure you can't imagine that to watch the music video like that was impossible in the Soviet Union. I heard the Beatles' songs at the first time only in the middle of '70s, i.e. after few years since the dissolution of them.

Your welcome. We have no time limits here so you weren't tardy! I'm glad you enjoyed watching the full version. Didn't the Beatles perform in Russia before they broke up or am I mistaken? Maybe it was just one Beatle?

Unfortunately, it's just no more than sweet legend. The Beatles have never been in the Soviet Union. The first from them who had arrived USSR was Paul but only in the form of LP "Back in USSR" (1987). I store the vinyl.

Oops, I forgot... Of course, The Beatles' songs were published in the Soviet Union on vinyl but it wasn't like a Beatles. On the labels they were figured as a vocal and instrumental band. No name.

I see, BiR. Thanks for clarifying all of that. I wasn't aware of it. I love the Beatles. The way they composed their music was much in the complicated style of the masters. Musical geniuses with no formal training, they were and will always be.
