Here's an example of why FOX News is #1 in cable news
Fox's Megan Kelly confronts Senator Specter on the socialized medicine bill that is contained in the stimulus package. I challenge anyone to post a clip of any other news network raising the red flag about this issue.

Plus, she hammered him and he's a Republican. Fair and Balanced, if you ask me.Grim17 wrote:Fox's Megan Kelly confronts Senator Specter on the socialized medicine bill that is contained in the stimulus package. Shhhhhhh... Don't say that too loud, or the heads of some of the liberals around here could explode.

Re: Here's an example of why FOX News is #1 in cable news
My interest is peaked. If she's reaming a Republican, I'd like to see that. (Not because he's a Republican, but because it's Fox News doing it.) Fox News and MSNBC, in my personal opinion, are about equal. They both have good points and bad. I love Keith Olbermann (and I'm also for socialized medicine) but I also love Dave Ramsey, and he's broadcast through Fox. Those are honestly about the only 2 shows on news channels I bother watching anymore.
Anyway, I'll have to come back and watch it. The kiddo fell asleep on the couch and I don't want to wake her up.
Oh, and Grim - is that you and your wife or significant other?? If so - CUTE!

You all do realize the reason she's hammering him is because he was one of three Republicans who broke with the party obstructionist line, worked on a compromise, and voted for the stimulus don't you? The other two who might get reamed on Fox are Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe.

That's true that he was one of 3 republicans who voted for the package, but my point was that FOX News is the only news network that has addressed that provision in the bill. Megan Kelly busted his ass, and it was apparent that he had no clue that was even in there.
I give a huge thumbs up to FOX for exposing that bullshit.

Because it was way over the top. Also yes off topic as well. I just went off there. Then when I posted it, I thought to myself probably better to remove it.

Ok, I couldn't make it past the first 2 minutes. Sorry, but I disagreed with EVERYTHING Megan Kelly said. Not only that, but I wouldn't consider Fox News to be the first to reveal this information since at the start Megan Kelly said they found it out from Bloomberg. Bloomberg may not be a network, but the information was out there and available before Fox News covered it.

Agreed, all Fox is doing is advancing the tired old 'creeping socialism' talking point. That's why no one else is reporting it as news, because it's not.
Next up- complaining no one read the stimulus bill- wait for it

Are you saying congress did read it, and saying otherwise is a lie?
Or are you saying they didn't read it, and making mention of that is knit-picking?

What I'm saying is it's not uncommon for congress critters not to read a final bill before voting on it, and it's not really a cause for outcry. Because, they've read the original and have voted up or down on the amerndments, assuming they were on the floor for them. Which a majority are or there wouldn't be a quorum. That's not to say sometimes things don't get put into bills under the radar, but not the major provisions. And they also have staff who keep track of what's been put in and taken out as legislation progresses, so they always have an executive summary at minimum.

The fact is, they not only didn't read it... they couldn't have.
Nancy Pelosi gave less than 24 hours for the members of congress to read the 1100 pages contained in the bill, before she called for a vote on it. I happened to catch an audio clip on the radio, of some congressman raising hell about it on the floor of the house.
I'm sorry, but I feel it's not only their job, but their duty as elected representatives of the people, to read each and every bill cover to cover before voting on it.

Re: Here's an example of why FOX News is #1 in cable news
So instead of getting things done that you don't like, Grim, they can get nothing done at all? It's physically impossible for our Senators and Representatives to read through every single bill presented to the floor before voting on it and still have time to vote on all of them.
I don't agree with the 24 hour limitation they did, that does bother me. BUT that's why they all have assistants. If you have several people helping you, you can get through a 1100 page bill in 24 hours if you don't like to sleep.

I don't agree with what Pelosi did and I didn't agree with Tom DeLays tactics either. Democrats used the rushing of the Patriot Act for political purposes even though they knew damn well what was in it the same way Republicans are doing now. It's just political gamesmanship.
I think it's impractical for them to read every final bill cover to cover. That's why they have large staffs.

The democrats were given ample time to read all the provisions of the patriot act. In fact, it incorporated 3 other bills that had already been passed earlier, so there wasn't that much new to be covered in the final bill. The Patriot Act also wasn't loaded down with a bunch of pork projects either. Besides, the democrats never claimed that they hadn't had time to read the Patriot Act before it's passage, until a year or two down the road when the Bush hating liberals, their ever faithful media, and the anti-war crowd started picking it apart for political gain. The reason you know it was all political show on the democrats part, is because they reauthorized the thing in 2005.
This stimulus package is another monster entirely. It has so much shit thrown in, that it needs to reviewed. The republicans were right to bring up this matter before a vote took place, rather than politicizing it later down the line like the democrats did with the patriot act.

I can agree with you on that. The problem here is, there wasn't enough time given for even a large staff to digest all that crap. Given the astronomical amount of money that is involved here, this thing needed to be picked through with a fine toothed comb by every single member of congress before any vote took place. Politics or no politics, allowing members of congress to read the damned thing before a vote, should have been allowed.

Re: Here's an example of why FOX News is #1 in cable news
I really don't think it's as big a deal as it seems. The House debate started Jan 27 or 28, so your looking at right around 14 days not including Sundays. I used to routinely have to deal with 1000+ pages of project documents with tons of addenda in that time frame with one or two other people, often working 2-3 bids of that size at a time. When you do it for a living day in and day out it's not that hard. I took a quick look at the Senate version 2/7 provision A documents, and I can see that it would be the same thing for someone who dealt with legislative documents all the time.Grim wrote:This stimulus package is another monster entirely. I think the Republican strategy is to use this complaint as a cover for their 'no' vote if the package produces positive results and has popular support in their districts/states when November 2010 rolls around.
