Happy Derby Day
It's a Kentucky thing I know... but who cares. I'm kicked back and watching the races at Churchill Downs on tv. Don't know what time the Derby will run... I think about 5:30pm edt.
The track is "sloppy" & the horses are beautiful!

Thanks for the added input!! I didn't know Fox Sports had it as well.
BTW, this is a requirement (tear in the eye is optional)

The favorite has already been stratched! Track officials, vets, owners, etc... are being exceptionally careful this year! Good for the horsesHotParadox wrote:enjoy, paul! i hope it's exciting yet uneventful, in a good way.

Too bad we won't be seeing Rachael Alexandra in the Derby but she won the Oakes yesterday...She's a filly to watch...she's being compared to Ruffian...but I don't want to go there..Hope we have a good derby...

Re: Happy Derby Day
How much does a derby horse cost normally? They were saying they paid $9500 for Mine That Bird, doesn't seem like much for a horse you'd run in the derby. I don't know how much a boney quarter horse would cost, but that still doesn't sound like a lot for a animal that would win.
Re: Happy Derby Day
"Normally"... it can be anywhere from $250,000 and up... just to buy the horse.
They might have "paid" $9,500 for him, but they also had to pay for training, vet, transportation, insurance, jockey fees, loads in entry & track fees... not to mention all the extra fees that I don't know a thing about.
That was the same jockey who rode Rachael Alexander in the Oakes yesterday!

Re: Happy Derby Day
Yea, I was thinking along $300,000 would be more likely a price for the horse.
That was cool when the jockey threw a rose up to his parents. Brought a tear to my eye... not really but it touched me just the same.

He was asked what would have happened if Rachael Alexandra was running this race...He feels she could run with the males with no problem...she is a large horse...Mine that bird is a small horse...the jockey was just great.
I like a rags to riches story and this was one of them!!!!!

Nah, you get used to it just like you get used to the higher altitude. If it gets to nasty outside I will just turn up the heat and stay home

Re: Happy Derby Day
I watched; it was awesome, thrilling, exciting. Seldom does such a story emerge before one's eyes. Especially from teh vantage point of television, when overhead shots give a premimum view, such as those in the stands that pay big bucks cdon't even see.
I saw that little brown horse running lasst, after the start and though: "don't care to pay attention to that one, they are in there just for the run. Next thing, it shows an overhead and focus on the pack grouped at the front and here comes this little horse runing unbelievably fast and Jockey not urging with a whip. It blows right by and sets out in front over six lengths.
Fantastic.
I read in the New York TImes newspaprwhere the jockey commented, something to the efect: " Well, all of the jockeys got their top picks first and I had to pretty much take what was left. So I was left with no choice but to ride this horse, which I didn't know anything about...
Rest is history!!!

BELMONT DAY
Today is the Belmont Stakes. We won't see a triple crown victory but we might see a jockey win all three races on different horses...Its still a thrill. I still remember Secretariat ...what a race....He won by 31 lengths and took the track record at 2:24 minutues...it's still the standard today..I wish Mind That Bird all good luck. "2 out of three ain't bad" so the saying goes.

But unfortunatly, someone else won. But sure is nice to see The Falcon back here again. I was beginning to think that she had her wings clipped for good.

Re: Happy Derby Day
Thats the way it goes in horse racing...the belmont is anyone's race...its a big challenge for a horse to go that distance. I enjoyed myself... ESPN showed all the races for the day. Maybe next year!!!!!!!
