I think you should have a virtual Camp Delta.

You can put all of them in, and they can go over and over it, on their own.

We could watch.

It would be like Jerry Springer.

Just a suggestion?

Too hard to pronounce.

I would go with 'A really shitty place to be'.

Kinda says it all, imo.

Okay, Steve and doggieboy. This thread is strictly for people who have a problem for me or another mod. It was for that purpose only, that I designed this thread.

I don't want this commenting back and forth, or Steve trying to solve a problem for a member. That is what the mods are for and that is what this thread is for:MOD to MEMBER discussion. Please Steve. Thanks. I love you

Steve, please let's not start with the chill out stuff. That started the last problem and we are past that.

This is NOT the proper thread to have a laugh at the expense of people whose lives are upside down. I have asked you nicely, you've had your fun, but I want it to end now.

There is no need for you to be on this thread unless you need help with a problem. Please, Steve.

In your personal profile settings. Go to "Profile >> Preferences" and enable the option "Always attach my signature". Your signature should now be attached to all posts you make, if you actually have content in it.

Check YES in 11th preference under "preferences".
It says this:
Always attach my signature :
Yes No

OK, see if that works! bounce

Re: PROBLEM? ASK ME FOR HELP

Post by HotParadox on Mon Feb 16, 2009 9:30 pm

One more thingy. When you want to reply to a post, and you hit either Quote or Post Reply (not Quick Reply, however) a box with "Options" is located under the "Preview/Send" buttons. Make sure you have the second to the last boxed checked. If, for some reason, you don't want your signature to show on any particular post you make, you can uncheck the box. This is a temporary uncheck, for one post only, and does not change the option you selected in your profile.

It goes like this, directly under the "Preview/Send":
Options
Disable HTML in this post
Disable BBCode in this post
Disable Smilies in this post
Attach signature (signatures can be changed in profile)
Notify me when a reply is posted

Re: PROBLEM? ASK ME FOR HELP

Post by Theophilus on Tue Feb 24, 2009 10:43 pm

Hi. I have been wanting to post some political cartoons. Though I am worried about copyright issues. I go to some sites for these cartoons, and I am not quite clear what I can use off some of these sites. I see they charge for some of the pictures. I think I can use them as long as they are not posted on a for profit blog. Though the fact that they do charge for the cartoons for some websites give me pause. I was hoping I could get some clarification on what I can copy then post here.

Thanks.

Re: PROBLEM? ASK ME FOR HELP

Post by DM007 on Wed Feb 25, 2009 12:09 am

It's very simple, actually. First, there's no such thing as "public domain". Just because it's viewable and accessible to the public, in a public form, does not mean there are no restrictions. ALL content you find on the internet is automatically expressly protected by copyright and may not be reproduced or used in a way other than specific, expressed policy, UNLESS: it is yours, and you reproduce it yourself, or release the copyright; or you have permission to use it, from the copyright holder. Websites, like Youtube, have a copyright policy in place in regards to every piece uploaded to their server. If you upload a video or image to Youtube, you can "deny" the embedding privilege.

It boils down to this: If it isn't yours, it probably belongs to someone else.

The reality is, most images and media in general throughout the internet and circulating email, is copyright violated content. You may have not "personally" ripped it from the owner, but someone did. Unless you can be found to have actually copied content from the owner's location, you have "plausible deniability" (ignorance), in which case, a "demand to quit" or "cease and desist" request makes you culpable for future violations of that property, but none with the current incident. As long as you stop when asked, no problem.

I don't know anyone who is not a cyber-criminal (except, perhaps, John McCain), including yours truly. We've all done it. If you've forwarded an email (or received and kept it) with images or original quotes (when you don't know the originator), you've done it. Cartoons included.

However, you can always link to complete website addresses, as long as the address completely resolves to the owner's page, unmolested.

Just make sure you don't hotlink to the actual image itself on their website so that it shows up on the forum. Save it to your computer then upload it to photobucket or something using your bandwidth and then give a link and credit to the site. Hotlinking the image is stealing bandwidth.

Yeah. Links are always safe. Most people don't bother to give it thought, or acknowledge the efforts of others. Kudos to those who do.

Also, getting permission is simple. Just ask. Most of the time, it will be granted. Often, all that's asked is proper credit is given, usually in the form of a site link, URL, or a full name and date.

True about the hotlinks. Not only is it a copyright violation, but bandwidth theft, as well.

I always hot link. Tell me if I hot link. I find an image on google. Then I copy and paste it to the little icon up top that says:"Image". Is that bad? Is that a hot link?

Re: PROBLEM? ASK ME FOR HELP

Post by DM007 on Wed Feb 25, 2009 1:38 am

Check the "properties" of an image you've posted. It's hotlinked. You can tell, because the "location" will be the site you copied it from. Hotlinking is when you post an image, but the image is loaded from the original server, where you first saw it. This is why "hosting" an image is preferred. It is uploaded to a photo server (or a forum server), then served to the post, which is OK (copyright aside). Don't feel bad. Most folks do it this way, and never give it a thought or know they're doing it. If you "upload" an image from your computer, you are not "hotlinking" it.

I don't check images I see here, or elsewhere. I quit looking too close around me a long time ago. I've discovered, if I look too closely, I'm surrounded by crooks. Everyone is guilty of something (and I'm not exempt....I'm only human). I've found it's easier to find (and keep) friends if I don't question every little thing (old habit). Just the curse of a retired LEO (AKA: flatfoot Poindexter mode - suspicious of everything). It's very difficult to just "turn it off". If you think I sound like I'm lecturing, that's it. Let me know. Sometimes I don't even realize it. I do have many other talents, believe it or not. Sometimes, I even have a sense of humor....
